What is agentic AI? (and how it differs from chatbots)

Agentic AI describes AI systems that can pursue a goal on their own — planning steps, using tools, reading context and taking actions — rather than producing a single reply and stopping. The unit of agentic AI is the AI agent.

• Generative AI produces content (text, code, images) from a prompt.
• A chatbot wraps generative AI in a conversation, answering questions one at a time.
• An AI agent is given a goal — "find me the top 5 suppliers and draft outreach" — and works out the steps, calls tools (search, email, code), checks results, and keeps going until the job is done.

That loop of plan → act → observe → adjust is what makes agentic AI useful for real work instead of just answers.
